A day to cherish!

-Simar(ID_51)

Millions said the apple fell but Newton was the one to ask why. This is precisely what today’s session provoked and led us as a team to go on a quest to search the answers to our own questions .The day began with the inspiring words of Mr. Manohar Kamath and Mr. Aditya, and a mention of resource management paved way for our target of the day(17th June,2008):to get a job for the day with a minimium earnings of Rs. 150.The entire day was all about resource management from the time we stepped out of SIMS gate. We grouped ourselves into a group of three batchmates and set out asking for lifts. Managed one the quickest and crossed some good yards, caught up another one and were left in the middle of nowhere.I being from Chandigarh, was boggled to see the chaotic traffic and the rush.Thankfully, the feeling set in surprisingly quickly than i thought was capable of me! So, here we were left in the rush hour, trying to find a single manned vehicle. One of our buddy left on a two-wheeler in order to reach the CAMP area before time and begin the task.
Finally after asking tons of people on the road-sides,we were approached by a concerned on-looker for help. The sweet little soul lent us the rent for the auto to the CAMP area.Ariving at the designated place, we quickly co-ordinated with our buddy who’d left early, and looked up the options available. We went in some fifteen shops, banks, social, educational and financial institutions and firms before finally convincing the branch manager Mr. Arvind Singh form Woodlands,19MG Road.We were fortunate enough to find the head who had the authority to allow us the permission to be on job for the day.My two buddies and I were convincing enough and the manager kind enough, and so we managed to get a job for the day well before the deadline.
After the quick background checks and talks on the kind of work to be done,we along with Mr. Arvind decided to do a physical MARKET SURVEY of the retail stores and big brands in the shoe and garment industry as Woodland falls under the same league of retailing. We briefed ourselves about the scope and type of points we needed to cover under our survey. The points that we targeted were are as follows: At Nike-MG ROAD)
1. USP
2. Fast Moving Goods
3. Average Sales per month

4. Peak Selling Seasons Reebok
5. Discount Seasons
6. Manufacturers and Distributors
7. Competitors
8. Promotional Activities
The Outlets Surveyed:
1. Adidas
2. Metro
3. Nike
4. Reebok
5. Regal
6. Bata
7. Liberty
8. Khadims
9. United Colors of Benetton (At Reebok-MG ROAD)

10. Adidas(Khakde Mall)
11. Pepe Jeans(Khakde Mall)
The volume and stature of the data we gathered was new, informative and formative for us as young student managers. The technologies and terminologies i learnt today were not only new to me but also exciting as they dealt with the most basic amenities of life-shoes and clothing. It was an experience of it’s kind because i came in talking terms with big figures concerning each retail outlet and understand this market. Below is the report we created for Woodlands.

My learning’s:
I understood that it is a buyer’s market here in Pune and with certain outlets like Metro and Regal are a ‘One Stop All’ for Shoes.Between the waiting sessions i noticed customers walking merrily into the stores. Some walked off with their choiced shoes, some promised to come back, some gave grave grins at the stock displayed, and there were others for happy window shopping.Kids who would just stand and give cute little smiles typical of them, urchins of all sex and age, youngsters in all bright colours under the sun,in all flappy and fancy outfits who would go home to their mothers and complain of the shortage of garments with them. There were people in eating joints, in less priced in-markets, attendants at stores just whiling away their time to glory baring some scanty toiling to work hard and get higher in the management hirerachy. It is here, that i’m reminded of a person in the Reebok outlet who actually showed us their Guide Book which included all nuances of the Retail Sector. He was a pool of knowledge ,(as Sir Kamath mentioned in the morning) a know all in his ‘Comfort Zone’ and making all efforts under his capabilities to excel and do even better. It was a pleasure meeting him. Here, I’ll also make a special Mention to the owner of Regal India. He is an uncle in his mid 50’s, a business graduate himself, who ‘loves’ to sit at his store and watch and connect to his customer’s thought from the moment he enters his abode. He makes a special mention of the word ‘love’ for his job in almost every alternate sentence he speaks and it’s nice to hear such an experience of ‘love’ for your work in todays donkeys serviced industries. Wherein people so busy in their routines and rotes and in their utter confusion of the Do’s and the Dont’s forget or simply misplace the idea of ‘love’ for the work they opted for at one point in time of their lives.Their work.Their Lives. It was here, that I felt really refreshing, despite my heels paining with a walk of over 8 kms already. A pleasure and a lovely experience sharing span which i enjoyed. Then all sorts of questions that I had primarily chalked down for our questionnaire were the next intertsting and formative event for me. In a land of taboos and a no-no culture on the talk of Money and the related matters,I found big companies initially hesitant and then reaveling on their average monthly sales figures.Big numbers. I presume these were approximation though, but none-the –less were spelled out with a streak of genuine paint from the mouths of people of the stature of Store managers.
A mention again, to Mr. Arvind here for his considerate co-operation and sheer professionalism to have given us the opportunity of such a task. It enabled me to learn an array of new terms and to experience a first job task, with a earning of Rs. 150; my first at a task like this. Now is it that I understood the meaning of-‘Hard Earned Money’.
I liked to also appreciate the efforts of my two team-mates- Mr. Nitin Nair and Mr. Santosh Loknath. It was wonderful for a first –time interaction.
Also like to extend my gratitude to Mr. Kamath for this unusual and formative task.
I’d also like to appreciate and pat myself on my back for keeping that strange energy with myself all throughout and for the constant determination and hopefulness of the report being up to the standards.
It was, in totality a learning and enriching experience.
